BOTOX® – more than a wrinkle buster.

In the dermatological world, it is commonly known that Botox® is used to treat unwanted facial wrinkles. The primary pharmacological function of Botox® is to temporarily paralyze muscles (any muscles of the body) for three to six months, and thus, it allows the overlying skin wrinkles to heal and fade. Generally, patients receiving Botox® for wrinkle treatment only are happy with their smoother faces. After repeated use of Botox® to a specific area, partial permanent results can be expected.

In the advent of wide spread use of Botox® by plastic and reconstructive surgeons, who possess greater knowledge of all the facial muscles, Botox® has been used to produce astounding results in the changing of facial expressions – a form of soft tissue sculpturing. Now, besides wrinkle reduction, we can change the muscle functions around the eyes to raise the eyebrows to give the eyes a more youthful look, and around the mouth to widen and brighten the smile. We can also use Botox® to flatten unsightly angular jaw muscles in women, or to treat bow-legged-ness by reshaping the muscle silhouettes of the legs.

Finally, Botox® has been used to paralyze the tiny muscles of sweat-glands to treat excess palm and underarm perspirations (truly social nuisances).
